So I’m in the auto parts place today picking up a can of fix-a-flat for my g/f’s beigemobie (it’s actually red, but who cares?) as she’s going a tire with a slow leak. I’m at this place frequently, and no matter how many people are “working” you always have to stand around and wait for someone to ring you up. So it goes.

I’m listening to the guy ahead of me loudly lamenting to the cashier about how he needs to get his car an alignment along with a bunch of other repairs. He says the alignment is so screwed up he had a hard time driving to the store.

Cashier: “What kind of car is it?”

Guy: “2015 Mustang.”

Cashier: “2015? And it needs an alignment? That’s weird.”

Guy: “Yeah I was doing a burnout and hit a bunch of shit.”

Me: HAHAHAHAHA

Both guys pause and look at me and luckily I had my phone in my hand and I held it up like I was laughing about something I just read or whatever. I don’t think either of them bought it but luckily another register opened and I quickly moved away.

If I was a tire tech, I’d have to punch you for using Fix-A-Flat.

She drives to work in the morning with a cup of coffee in the drink holder. Not a cup with a lid, mind you. A literal goddamn cup of sloshing everywhere coffee. Every day. She also has a warranty that covers the tires but can’t be bothered. She’s cool with 15lbs of tire pressure. $5 can of fix-a-flat it is.

There are no nearby tire places that will patch it up? Where I live, you can get it done for the same $5 you used for the fix-a-flat.

You take the GF’s car to a tire store and buy her the best tires that will go on the car. Sure, it’s 400 or more dollars, but you buy so much credibility by keeping her SAFE. Tires and shocks (and sway bars and the rest of the suspension) keep the car on the road. But if you want points that last beyond 2020? TIRES beyotch!

The tires are actually in great shape, really, aside from the leak. She actually asked a tech to look at her tires as the low pressure light came on and he said that they’re finicky in that model and that they’re fine. They actually do look fine, which is weird, as when I read the pressure on all four all looked right but the one was quite low. I filled it and the light went out. Then I fixed all the other things that had the other lights on. So she’s got a warranty, but the folks don’t seem too swift where she has to take it so I will end up taking the car in myself and giving folks there the hairy eyeball sooner or later. This is just to get her through the week really. Mechanically the car is actually very sound. Cosmetically, it’s a horror show. She spilled pine tar all down the side of it and let it sit in the sun for a week before discovering it was hard to remove. It’s hard for me to get excited to work on her car.

Cosmetics? Feh! Who cares.

The other issue is alignment - since the repairs have been done, has it been aligned? Also important ....

Funny that that was an actual conversation, but that can of fix-a-flat isn’t going to be so funny to the next guy that takes that tire off.

Did you say she spilled pine tar on the car? How does one do that? Or did you just mean pine tar from a tree fell on the car naturally?

It’s actually something like almond tree sap or some shit. Something very Californian, and a natural remedy for having an extra $20 in your wallet. She bought a jar of whatever it is at street fair and I guess the stuff seperates and settles inside of the jar and she went to pour off the stuff on the top and ended up pouring it down the driver’s side door by accident. It’s tar, from a tree, that she poured on the car. I’ve tried several times to find something that will get it off without removing the paint and all it’s done it collect grime and get worse.

She takes great care of other things. Furniture, clothing, etc. Cars? She hates cars because she feels like there is always something wrong with them and it simply can’t be helped so why bother.

That paints a pretty clear picture. Good luck getting it cleaned up. There is a detailers group on Facebook. “Detailing for Dummies”. Maybe join that group and ask the question there. Tons of great information.
